Japanese spirit alongside Mikhail Eisenstein’s Art Nouveau buildings
Did you know that the best sushi in Europe is prepared in Riga? Or that young people from 10 to 30 years of age prefer just Japanese rolls to other dishes? The restaurant Yakuza have successfully incorporated this favourite dish of Riga into the Art Nouveau environment; the restaurant is located in one of the most beautiful streets of the city – Elizabetes Street, close to the masterpieces of the great architect of the early 20th century.
Creating the summer terrace design for the Japanese restaurant we had to take into account the specific location – and this time the key was Art Nouveau. Therefore, as light as possible, transparent and at the same time durable frame construction was chosen: vertical columns and horizontal rods are joined together with rounded connecting elements, which elegance resembles forgings. The terrace is covered with striped fabric in classic Art Nouveau colours close to natural, serene floral tones that create a peaceful atmosphere.
The fabric cut brings out a retro style – the frontal cut edging and the fine side inlets create a visual effect of a pavilion. However, tribute was also to be paid to Japan, where every little corner of nature within the city walls is worshipped. Therefore, the fencing of the terrace is designed exactly like a Japanese garden: flower boxes with living green plants surround the terrace. Although having their meal in a crowded street, the restaurant guests can enjoy solitude behind the carefully trimmed thuja bushes.
In the respectable so called “quiet center” of Riga, in the area where a lot of popular restaurants are concentrated, we had to offer an original and secure solution for the summer terrace that would highlightYakuza among the other restaurants. We seem to have succeeded.
